«El Chico Ariel»

Oriundo de Viña del Mar, Ariel Mancilla Ramírez llegó a Santiago para estudiar Construcción Civil en la Universidad Técnica del Estado (UTE), ingresando en 1967. Algunos de los que serían sus compañeros de estudios y luego de ideas –Luis Navarrete, Octavio Díaz, José Quintana y Luis Casado– aún lo recuerdan como un joven atípico, de sonrisa contagiosa y con un detalle en la ropa que lo hacía aún más especial: sus pantalones más arriba de los tobillos, los que dejaban ver unos eternos calcetines rojos. Ignorando las bromas, explicaba que ese particular look era el detalle que definía a un auténtico bailarín de rock and roll. En su caso, “al mejor de la Población Gómez Carreño y sus alrededores”.

Pese a que en un primer momento se mantuvo al margen de toda participación política o estudiantil –quizás por su propia situación familiar dado que su padre era un estricto suboficial de la Armada–, pronto manifestaría su interés por vincularse a la organización en la que militaba la mayoría de sus amigos. Fue al volver de unos trabajos voluntarios realizados en el verano de 1968 cuando Ariel se acercó a los jóvenes socialistas con la intención de ingresar a la organización. Aunque al principio siguió prefiriendo bailar o imitar a Raphael en las fiestas del pensionado, antes que participar en reuniones, ese mismo año se involucró activamente en la elección del Centro de Alumnos de la carrera, el único de la UTE  que permanecía en manos de la DC, campaña que culminó con el triunfo –por solo un voto– del candidato socialista Franklin Ojeda.

De ahí en adelante, Ariel se caracterizaría por un apego radical a la disciplina y al cumplimiento de las tareas partidarias, por más particulares que pudieran parecer. José Quintana lo recuerda con una anécdota: “Ese mismo año, el 26 de julio, el núcleo de la escuela decidió realizar unos rayados por el aniversario del asalto al Cuartel Moncada, el inicio de la Revolución Cubana. Para que tuvieran más duración, los haríamos con alquitrán en vez de pintura”. En la noche de la acción, solamente aparecieron José y Ariel, recordando que “el chico dijo que igual teníamos que cumplir, aunque fuéramos los dos. En eso estábamos cuando empezaron a ladrar unos perros y después se oyó un balazo”. Ariel intentó tranquilizarlo: “No se preocupe, compañero, solo son tiros de fogueo”. Cuando vino el segundo, que rebotó en el mismo muro, Ariel, tirando los tarros y las brochas dijo: “La misión se aborta por hoy… ¡¡y apretemos cueva que son balazos de verdad!!”.

Por esta época, la JS de Construcción Civil de la UTE se había incorporado a trabajar territorialmente en la Tercera Comuna, la que abarcaba a tradicionales barrios de las comunas de Quinta Normal y Santiago. Luis Navarrete recuerda que Ariel fue uno de los más activos en ese trabajo, que permitiría ampliar la influencia política y social del PS a los trabajadores de la Fundición Libertad –cuyo edificio alberga hoy las dependencias de la Universidad ARCIS– y a los secundarios de los Liceos Amunátegui, Barros Arana y 4 de Niñas, entre otros.

La influencia definitiva que empujó a Ariel a la militancia vino de la mano de Alberto Galleguillos, un viejo y comprometido profesor socialista que dirigía el Liceo Integral Nº 1, precisamente en la Tercera Comuna. Se trataba de un ‘sui generis’ como establecimiento educacional que durante el día atendía la formación de alumnos expulsados de otros colegios, y por las tardes, se transformaba en una verdadera sede partidaria donde se reunían mujeres, trabajadores y vecinos, además de realizar todas las actividades y reuniones del PS.

Luis Navarrete recuerda que fue precisamente en ese establecimiento que Ariel y él recibieron sus carnés partidarios, de manos de una antigua y querida militante del sector, en el marco de una emotiva ceremonia.

A pesar de que Ariel no destacaba por una estatura privilegiada –por lo que era conocido como el Chico Ariel–, sus amigos envidiaban sus pestañas y el brillo particular de su mirada, que –según Luis Casado– le hacían tener mucho éxito entre las jóvenes de la universidad.

Durante las primeras semanas de 1971, Ariel y la mayoría de sus compañeros se encontraban preparando las segundas jornadas de trabajos voluntarios con la ONSEV, una entidad que el Gobierno Popular había formado para coordinar la realización de estos tradicionales operativos de verano. Ariel no tenía previsto ir ese año pero colaboraba en la inscripción de los jóvenes que a fines de aquel mes de enero partirían rumbo a diversas localidades de Llanquihue.

José Quintana era uno de los dirigentes a cargo y recuerda que casi al cierre de los cupos, una estudiante de la jornada vespertina llegó a inscribirse al local del Centro de Alumnos. Se trataba de Ema Fuenzalida, una alumna muy buenamoza que de inmediato cautivó a Ariel, al punto de que este “no solo cambió la decisión de no ir, sino que además apeló a nuestra amistad para lograr que ambos quedaran en el mismo campamento”.

Ya de vuelta en Santiago el noviazgo se consolidó. Ema también se unió a la militancia socialista de la UTE donde brillaría con colores propios. Un día, la joven pareja sorprendió a todos anunciando que se iba a casar. No pasó mucho tiempo para que ello efectivamente ocurriera: el matrimonio fue una breve ceremonia ante un oficial del Registro Civil, luego de que todos se trasladaron a una casa en Gran Avenida donde se bailó hasta tarde con los discos de cumbias y tonos tropicales de Quilapayún. Como en un ritual laico y socialista, tanto los novios como sus amigos de la UTE desecharon las tenidas formales y llegaron a la boda uniformados con las camisas verde olivo de la JS.

A esas alturas, Ariel ya era un gran dirigente, querido y respetado por todos. En 1970 ofició de “interventor” de la JS de la UTE, por un conflicto que amenazaba con distanciar dos sectores de la militancia de aquella universidad: los “elenos” y los denominados “militantes rojos”, conducidos por Juan Gutiérrez. Meses más tarde, en compañía de Luis Casado, viajaba a difundir la candidatura de la UP entre las comunidades mapuches de la empobrecida zona costera de Osorno, de la mano de una joven militante vinculada al trabajo rural: Sara Montes.

Luego del triunfo de la UP, Ariel colaboró activamente en el éxito de ese proceso inédito en la historia de la izquierda, que mantenía los ojos del mundo puestos sobre el país. A la XX Conferencia Nacional de la JS asistió como delegado por la Tercera Comuna y resultó electo miembro del Comité Central y asumió luego la Secretaría Nacional de Frentes de Masas.

A la par de sus actividades en la dirección de la JS, se vinculó profesionalmente al Departamento de Estudios de la CORVI (Corporación de la Vivienda). Junto a varios de sus compañeros de generación, colaboró también en la creación del Departamento de Ejecución de Obras de la misma entidad, que buscaba sortear el frecuente boicot que algunas empresas constructoras de la época realizaban en contra del Gobierno. Poblaciones como Jaime Eyzaguirre, Carlos Cortés, la Nueva Habana –ahora Nuevo Amanecer– y El Cortijo Sur, entre muchas otras, fueron edificadas por esta unidad, que llegó a ser la principal constructora del país, con un plantel cercano a los ocho mil trabajadores.

Alegre y querido por todos, era uno de los dirigentes con mayores posibilidades de convertirse en el nuevo Secretario General de la JS, en reemplazo de Carlos Lorca, cuyo período al frente de esa organización debía concluir en 1974.

Durante el día del golpe militar, Ariel se dirigió al local de la Juventud Socialista en Santiago, en donde, en compañía de otros dirigentes, procedió a eliminar los registros de los militantes, además de entregar instrucciones a los jóvenes que se congregaron en esa sede y en otros puntos de Santiago. Luego, el grupo partió a la zona sur de Santiago.

Después del 11 de septiembre de 1973, Ariel –con el nombre político de Gabriel– pasó a integrar la dirección del PS en la clandestinidad, en la cual destacó como uno de sus dirigentes más comprometidos, a cargo de la Unidad de Logística del Comité Central. Su rol era conseguir casas e infraestructura (pasaportes, dinero, contactos con embajadas) para los dirigentes clandestinos y para los militantes socialistas de regiones que, a partir del mes de octubre de ese año, comenzaron a llegar a la capital huyendo de la represión.

Nunca perdió el optimismo frente a sus compañeros. Luis Navarrete, uno de sus amigos de la UTE, fue detenido en Arica mientras intentaba cruzar la frontera con Perú. Luego de un mes arrestado, volvió a Santiago, totalmente descolgado de todo contacto partidario. Mientras esperaba locomoción en San Francisco y Alameda, alguien se detuvo a su lado y le saludó afectuosamente: “Era el chico, con su inseparable maletín en su mano derecha”. A esas alturas, Ariel ya era mencionado como uno de los mentores del Plan Zeta “y ahí estaba, buscado por cielo, mar y tierra, con su sonrisa y su mirada de siempre, al lado de la Iglesia de San Francisco”. Instalados en un café, Ariel le informó que la situación estaba difícil, pero que aún así “en este momento todo está bajo control”, una frase que solía repetir para levantar la moral de los militantes en momentos de derrota y desesperación.

Navarrete le contó sobre su detención en Arica y Ariel estimó que debía salir del país: “Ahí nuevamente se reafirmó como el orgánico irreductible que era, pues me dijo que iba a consultar mi situación con el Comité Central. Probablemente el CC entonces no era más que él y seis personas, pero tenía que consultarlo con los organismos regulares antes de tomar una decisión. Me citó para algunos días más, en el mismo lugar. Al punto llegó con Ema y Mariana, la hija de ambos. Mientras tomábamos unas bebidas me comentó que el Partido había autorizado mi salida del país. Antes de irse me asignó una misión: contar afuera todo lo que estaba pasando en Chile. Nos dimos un abrazo, me miró con sus ojos y con su sonrisa de siempre, y me entregó el nombre del contacto para mi salida. Fue la última vez que lo vi”.

Francisco Mouat también compartió estrechamente con Ariel y conoció muy de cerca los pormenores de su captura. En septiembre de 1974, Ariel le comentó que necesitaba “montar” una casa en la playa para que los miembros de Comité Central pudieran airearse y descansar un poco. Mouat echó mano de la casa que la madre de sus primos (los dirigentes del MOC, Eugenio e Ismael Llona) tenía en Cartagena, en las cercanías de la vieja Estación de Ferrocarriles. “Era muy apropiada: buena vista, una sola entrada, una vista maravillosa a la terraza de la Playa Chica, en fin. Con el pretexto que me habían echado de donde vivía, lo que era verdad, le pedí la casa en la playa a mi tía. Mi mujer y mi hijo se fueron a vivir allá, y yo viajaba los fines de semana, de repente con algunos compañeros de trabajo, a quienes invitaba a asados en la playa, para ambientar un poco a los vecinos”, relata.

En diciembre, Ariel le avisó que en cualquier momento se trasladaría a algún miembro de la Dirección hasta el refugio en la playa. “A fines de ese mes sonó la campanilla, y veo subiendo a Ariel, a Exequiel Ponce y a Mireya (Rodríguez) por la escalera de la casa. Se instalaron ahí, Ariel se fue como a los dos o tres días. El chico Ariel declaró su optimismo, porque se avanzaba en conversaciones y acuerdos con la DC, principalmente a través de Manuel Bustos. Mi mujer le preguntó cómo podía tener esa actitud tan positiva, teniendo en cuenta que en ese momento Ariel no sabía dónde estaba su hija, su padre estaba detenido en la Esmeralda y la Ema también estaba presa en algún recinto de la dictadura”. Pancho recuerda que se hizo un silencio, y que Ariel respondió: “Como soy y con lo que hago, recién voy en camino de convertirme en un hombre”.

Tras las dos semanas que Ponce pasó en Cartagena, venía el turno de Lorca y de Lagos Salinas. Al primero se le consiguió otra alternativa, mientras que Lagos prefirió no salir de Santiago. Ariel iba a ser el último de los miembros de la Comisión Política en descansar en la playa, sobre todo después de la salida en libertad de Ema, su compañera. Mouat recuerda que se hizo todo un operativo para chequear que no viniera enganchada por los servicios de inteligencia del régimen. Ema viajó antes a Cartagena. Ariel, en tanto se reunió con Mouat en Santiago, para revisar si el traslado se había realizado sin  problemas.

Mouat rememora con especial cariño esa jornada: “Ariel durmió conmigo esa noche, siempre lo hacía en un sofá, pero esa noche estaba ocupado. Como a las tres de la mañana, sentí de pronto que él me estaba abrazando. Al otro día, al despertar, me levanté agarrándolo pal leseo, diciéndole que la clandestinidad lo estaba afectando demasiado. El se mataba de la risa”.

Esa mañana, los dos amigos  quedaron de irse a la playa en el bus de las siete de la tarde. Mouat debía salir a trabajar, mientras que Ariel tenía prevista una reunión con parte de la Comisión Política y uno de sus equipos de apoyo. A la hora convenida, Ariel no llegó y Mouat decidió partir sólo a Cartagena. “Yo pensé que Ariel llegaría en el tren que arribaba a las diez de la noche, pero no fue así. Al día siguiente tampoco llegó en ninguno de los tres primeros buses. Ahí ya me urgí, y decidimos sacar a Ema y a su hija de la pensión en la que las habíamos dejados por día y medio. De inmediato limpie la casa y embarretiné un ejemplar del Documento de Marzo que mi mujer había estado tipeando por instrucciones de Ariel”, rememora.

“Tomé el tren de vuelta a Santiago, y me fui a la casa de mi suegra. Los únicos que tenían el teléfono de mi suegra eran Ariel y Carolina Wiff, que trabajaba con él en el área de la logística, y a quien yo no conocía. Mi suegra me avisó que me había llamado una tal Carolina. Esa noche volvió a comunicarse, me dijo que perdonara, que no nos conocíamos personalmente, pero que teníamos amigos en común, y me nombró las chapas de algunos compañeros. Me planteó que necesitaba verme  urgente, ese mismo día. Entonces quedamos de juntarnos en Macul con Grecia. Nos encontramos y me contó que había caído Ariel, en una pensión junto a Sara Montes”.

Un pastor evangélico del sur del país, conocido de Sara, había venido a verla, y al parecer habría llegado enganchado por la DINA. Según Carolina, Ariel llegó a buscar un dinero donde Sara y fue detenido. En la esquina, incluso, lo esperaba Ricardo Lagos Salinas, que salvó providencialmente de ser capturado, ya que no quiso entrar y prefirió quedarse leyendo los diarios en un kiosco de la esquina.

La detención de Ariel se produjo el 14 de marzo de 1975, a las 13:30 horas, al momento de ingresar a una pensión en calle Ricardo Cumming N° 732, en una de cuyas habitaciones –que arrendaba Sara Montes– se iba a reunir con uno de los equipos que trabajaba bajo su dirección. Esa mañana había llegado al lugar Clara Rubilar, otra militante del PS, la que salió a hacer algunas compras a las 11:00 horas. Pocos minutos después, la vivienda fue allanada por un grupo de unos 15 agentes de civil, que se instalaron en la casa y montaron una ratonera para lograr su captura, que fue presenciada por algunos moradores, pues se trataba de una pensión donde vivían varias familias. Los agentes ya retenían a Sara, gravemente enferma de tuberculosis y que tenía un quiste hepático, que no tuvo ocasión de advertir la presencia de la DINA.

Ariel intentó convencer a los agentes que su identidad era otra, pero uno de los agentes lo reconoció: habían sido compañeros en el liceo. A partir de este hecho, intentó otra maniobra y convenció a los efectivos que lo acompañaran a un punto, en donde supuestamente contactaría con un alto dirigente del Comité Central. Sara Montes recuerda que el agente que conocía a Ariel asintió, pero le dijo que “si era un truco, no la contaría dos veces”. Llegados al lugar del falso contacto, aprovechó un descuido de sus captores para lanzarse a las ruedas de un microbús. Uno de los agentes le disparó, ocasionándole una fuerte herida en un pie. Pocos minutos después de haber salido, volvieron a la pensión e informaron a Sara Montes lo que había ocurrido: llevaban un bulto envuelto en una lona verde.

Sara Montes estuvo detenida varios días, pero finalmente logró internarse en un sanatorio de San José de Maipo.

Ya en el exilio, Sara entregó su testimonio, divulgado por el Comité Chileno de Solidaridad en La Habana. Contó que los agentes interrogaron y torturaron al joven en esa misma casa, la cual “estaba en manos de los organismos represivos desde las 11:00 horas, habiendo sido adecuada para interrogatorios y torturas. Tenían para estos efectos incluso un aparato radiotransmisor. De esta manera, soy testigo ocular de la detención de Ariel Mancilla y de sus torturas en esta primera etapa”.

La DINA buscaba a Ariel desde hace meses. Su hogar había sido allanado en dos oportunidades y en tres ocasiones su compañera, Ema Fuenzalida, también militante de la resistencia, había sido detenida, para lograr que se entregara. En una de esas ocasiones, Ema permaneció 15 días en Londres 38, fue sometida a brutales torturas y en otra oportunidad fue llevada al subterráneo de la Plaza de la Constitución.

María Gabriela Miranda era por entonces otra activa militante de la resistencia. A pesar de que su compañero, Enrique Norambuena, había sido detenido y se ignoraba su suerte a manos de la dictadura, seguía colaborando en las tareas de los dirigentes socialistas en la clandestinidad. Mientras se desempeñaba como administrativa en un estudio jurídico, recibió la visita de la Mami Julia, como era conocida la madre de Ema Fuenzalida. Esta le comentó que Ariel tenía serias dudas respecto a la seguridad del pequeño departamento que una hermana de Ema y Mariana, la hija de Ariel, ocupaban en Gran Avenida, y al que con frecuencia llegaba luego de sus actividades partidarias. Aunque en el lugar estaba “operativa” la señal de normalidad que habían convenido -una toalla colgada visiblemente en la ventana del baño-  Ariel sospechaba que algo extraño estaba pasando en esa casa.

“La Mami Julia me pidió que fuera a la casa usando una leyenda de secretaria de una oficina de abogados, para exigir el pago pendiente del arriendo, justificando mi presencia en ese lugar. Sin pensarlo ni medio segundo, fui. Acordamos, a través de Julia, juntarme con Ariel en las cercanías del departamento”, recuerda María Gabriela. “Llegué, estaba oculto detrás de una escalera de cemento, me dio algunas instrucciones, y me dirigí al departamento, que quedaba en un segundo piso, justo al final del pasillo. Golpeé dos veces y al abrirse la puerta apareció un tipo, que miró hacia todos lados y me ordenó entrar. Sentí un frío que me recorrió entera, pero me controlé, tenía que parecer una secretaria en un trámite de cobranza”, cuenta.

Los pocos minutos que María Gabriela estuvo allí le bastaron para darse cuenta del reciente allanamiento y de la ratonera que la DINA había montado: todo estaba tirado en el suelo, y en la cocina dos hombres retenían a la hermana de Ema, quien reconoció a María Gabriela y mantuvo la “historia” de la cobranza judicial.

Mientras eso ocurría, Eliana Medina, joven estudiante de 16 años, permanecía detenida en el subterráneo de la Plaza de la Constitución, junto a un grupo de militantes de la resistencia entre los que se hallaban Ema Fuenzalida, Mónica Tillería, Manuel Carpintero, Luis Arenas, Enrique Norambuena y Héctor Gatica. En declaración jurada del 8 de agosto de 1990 afirmó que: “Pude darme cuenta por los interrogatorios a que eran sometidos el resto de los detenidos, que se encontraban buscando a Ariel Mancilla, a quien habían ido a buscar a su casa, pero que no lo habían hallado. Sólo tenían detenida a su cónyuge”.

Ema visitó posteriormente la pensión de Cumming 732 y algunos moradores le dieron detalles de la detención y le informaron que Sara Montes fue sacada en una ambulancia. Según testimonios de detenidos, Ariel Mancilla fue conducido herido, a Villa Grimaldi.

Carena Zoila Pérez, quien estuvo detenida desde el 5 de marzo de 1975 hasta el 14 de junio de 1976 y que pasó 10 días en Villa Grimaldi, en declaración jurada ante notario del 9 de agosto de 1990, testificó que “en una ocasión, en una salida al baño junto con otras detenidas, Amelia Negrón le pasó su chaqueta a un detenido que se hallaba en muy malas condiciones. Carmen Santis lo identificó como Ariel Mancilla. Su camisa blanca tenía manchas de sangre. Por los gritos de los guardias me enteré que Mancilla había huido y que en su intento se había arrojado a las ruedas de un microbús. Fue la única vez que pude verlo”.

Fidelia Herrera, integrante del Comité Central del PS, que también se hallaba detenida en Villa Grimaldi –luego de ser capturada por un equipo de la DINA que integraba Luz Arce–, señaló en una entrevista a Radio Berlín Internacional de la RDA lo siguiente: “También vi. en Villa Grimaldi a Ariel Mancilla. La impresión que tuve al verlo fue realmente terrible. Hacía poco que había tenido contacto directo con el compañero Mancilla fuera de la prisión (…) A Ariel lo sostenían otros dos compañeros en brazos; se notaba malherido, ya que tenía la cabeza vendada. Al mirarlo más, vi que tenía un pie sangrando, prácticamente deshecho. El guardia, cuando yo me acerqué, ordenó a los detenidos que se retiraran. Al momento de hacerlo, Mancilla levantó su cabeza y pude verlo en forma directa. Fue tan enorme la impresión que retrocedí hasta la muralla, porque el muchacho joven y lleno de energías que había conocido se encontraba casi moribundo. El guardia, al ver mi gesto, lo atribuyó equivocadamente a mi mal estado de salud y me condujo de nuevo a la celda en que me encontraba”.

Lautaro Videla, por entonces uno de los hombres más importantes del MIR, detenido durante marzo de 1975 en Villa Grimaldi, declaró: “Fui testigo de la llegada a Villa Grimaldi de Ariel Mancilla, a quien conocía desde hacía más de cinco años”. Y agregó: “Estaba sumamente golpeado, cojeando de una pierna a causa de una herida y hematomas que le habían ocasionado un atropello del que fue víctima en su detención; tuve la oportunidad varias veces de conversar unos minutos con él, cuando lo trasladaban entre el baño y las celdas en formas de cajones llamadas por nosotros ‘Casas Chile’ y posteriormente entre el baño y la llamada Torre de Grimaldi, a la que lo trasladaron después. Estos contactos se hacían posibles pues su condición exigía que algún preso le ayudara a caminar”.

Luego de varios días de demanda del resto de los presos para que se le diera atención médica, uno de los médicos de la DINA  asistió a Ariel. Según Videla, “después de un examen superficial, decidió ‘operar’ al compañero y solicitó la ayuda de los presos para sujetarlo, mientras procedía a cortar tejidos muertos e infectados. Fui uno de los compañeros que ayudamos en la labor que realizaba el doctor al lado de nuestras celdas y sobre el suelo. La pierna de Ariel acusaba alguna forma de gangrena, sin embargo, fue vendado en el lugar y enviado de regreso a la Torre, para posteriormente desaparecer de la misma algunos días después y hasta hoy”.

Pequeño gran hombre: Nuestro amigo el Chico Ariel

En el inicio del año académico de 1965, comenzó a llegar a la UTE un nutrido grupo de compañeros y compañeras socialistas, especialmente al Instituto Pedagógico, a la Escuela de Construcción Civil y a las diversas sedes que la universidad mantenía en provincias. Así fueron llegando y contactándose compañeros como Susana Sánchez, Héctor Torres, Ulises Pérez, Juan Gutiérrez, el Gato Mella, Iván Martínez, Betsabé Padín, Luis Casado, Eric Asenjo, Lucho Navarrete, Erica Osorio, Franklin Moncada, Octavio Paz y muchos otros más. Entre ellos también apareció el chico Ariel.

De ese hermoso contingente de jóvenes socialistas, pronto empezó a destacar la figura del Chico Ariel. Estudiante responsable y militante serio y prolijo en el cumplimiento de las tareas que se le encomendaban, observador sagaz y con genuino deseo de aprender, recuerdo su especial preocupación por saber conciliar la teoría con la práctica política.

A medida que fuimos compartiendo la militancia y la vida estudiantil, fui conociendo más su origen porteño, su relación con su familia, sus inquietudes y sus aspiraciones. Lo recuerdo con Eric y a otros compañeros en el Pensionado de la Escuela de Construcción, compartiendo la sencillez acogedora de su habitación, la que tantas veces fue el refugio para muchos trasnochados o lugar para desarrollar nuestras a menudo largas reuniones políticas. Lo recuerdo en las marchas y las actividades que en la UTE realizamos en el contexto de la lucha por la Reforma Universitaria, por un mayor presupuesto o por el mejoramiento de las infraestructuras de nuestra universidad.

Lo recuerdo en malones y otras jornadas de convivencia en mi casa, en donde el chico Ariel siempre se las arreglaba para ser de la partida, al igual que Lucho Navarrete, Luis Casado y Eric Asenjo, imperdibles.  Recuerdo su deferencia hacia quienes eran nuestros mayores y su tremenda capacidad para moderar nuestros “ímpetus revolucionarios”.

Avanzado ya el Gobierno de Eduardo Frei, ante las siempre penosas condiciones en que se desenvolvía la economía, en el país se comenzó a experimentar los síntomas de una aguda lucha de clases. Eran 1968 y 1969, años en los que como jóvenes socialistas no quisimos estar al margen: paralelamente al trabajo político en la JS, nos hacíamos presentes en las industrias, en el campo y en las poblaciones del Gran Santiago.

Así, a fines de los 60 se multiplicaban a diario las tareas: pronto asumimos tareas de dirección en la FEUT y en el Centro de Alumnos de Construcción Civil; también íbamos al campo a trabajar en la alfabetización de campesinos y en la constitución de sindicatos agrarios, así como en apoyo a nuestros candidatos a parlamentarios por las zonas rurales: María Elena Carrera y Oscar Naranjo, entre otros. También se concertaban acciones en centros fabriles e industriales de Santiago. En todas aquellas actividades, incansable, siempre estaba nuestro amigo el Chico Ariel.

En 1971, la JS eligió una nueva dirección, en la que resultaron electos varios militantes de la UTE. Dos de los nuestros pasaron a formar parte de la nueva Comisión Política de la Juventud. El Chico Ariel fue uno de ellos, demostrando que aquella maduración política culminó con el reconocimiento a un joven valor, capaz de aportar experiencia, conocimiento ideológico y autoridad, basada en la legitimidad que le daba el trabajo permanente con los compañeros de base.

En esa etapa, recuerdo especialmente al Chico Ariel en dos acontecimientos: atendiendo a las delegaciones extranjeras en el 40º aniversario de la fundación del PS y la emotiva reunión que –a altas horas de la madrugada–  el comandante Fidel Castro tuvo con los dirigentes de la JS, durante su visita a Chile.

Ad portas del golpe, recuerdo el domingo 9 de septiembre, cuando en el Estadio Chile, y ante un encendido discurso del Secretario General del PS, la mayoría del Comité Central de la Juventud expresó su preocupación por la real capacidad de defensa del Gobierno Popular. Ariel y varios más manifestamos la necesidad imperiosa no sólo de defender al Gobierno, sino también de prepararnos para salvaguardar la existencia y el funcionamiento de nuestra orgánica en el que caso que la ofensiva del fascismo pasara a mayores.

El lunes 10 de septiembre, tras una reunión del Comité Central de la JS, una delegación de este, de la que formó parte Ariel, se reunió con un entonces destacado integrante de la CP del Partido, quien aseguró que, aunque la situación era seria, “existían condiciones para defender con éxito al Gobierno Popular”, y que por lo tanto nosotros, la Dirección de la JS debíamos “estar preparados para movilizar a los militantes y simpatizantes en las universidades, liceos, poblaciones e industrias del país”.

A esas alturas, conociendo las limitaciones de nuestro partido, recuerdo que con Ariel comentamos nuestras dudas acerca de una real capacidad de respuesta de la izquierda ante un más que probable golpe de Estado. Un día después se confirmarían nuestras aprehensiones, pero la idea del deber militante hizo que prácticamente la totalidad de la Dirección de la Juventud se volcara al cumplimiento de las tareas encomendadas. El Chico Ariel también cumplió las suyas.

Consumado el golpe, en los días que siguieron algunos dirigentes del Partido y la JS se volcaron al trabajo clandestino, intentando evitar que alguna documentación partidaria cayese en manos de los golpistas, indagando por el paradero de algunos compañeros, contactándose con familiares de detenidos o desaparecidos. En todas esas actividades estuvo Ariel, intentando dar ánimo a todos y evitando que el derrotismo y la desolación calaran hondo en algunos.

 Recuerdo la importancia que en esos días tuvieron para él Ema, su compañera, y su hija Mariana. Esta última era muy pequeña cuando su padre se entregaba en cuerpo y alma a la lucha por la democracia y el socialismo. Ema estuvo junto a Ariel desde los tiempos en los que ambos estudiaban en la UTE, y significaba la plenitud del sentimiento de pareja y de la militancia revolucionaria. En más de una ocasión, compartiendo una modesta cena, o en una pausa entre una y otra reunión, recuerdo que Ariel me expresó sus sentimientos como hijo, esposo y padre, el valor de una pareja y de una familia forjada al calor de la esperanza en la construcción de un sueño y de una nueva sociedad.
